- National School Lunch Program (NSLP) – NSLP is a federally assisted meal program operating in public and nonprofit private schools and residential childcare institutions. It provides nutritionally balanced, low-cost or free lunches to children each school day.
- Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) – SNAP (formerly known as food stamps) is a federal program that helps low-income people buy healthy food.
- Temporary Assistance for Needy Families Program (TANF) – TANF (or CalWorks) is a federally funded, state-run program. Also known as welfare, TANF helps families financially after experiencing hardship.
- Supplemental Security Income (SSI) – SSI provides monthly payments to people with disabilities and older adults who have little or no income or resources.
- Medicaid or Medi-Cal – Each state has its own version of the Federal Medicaid program, and California’s is called Medi-Cal. The program, administered by the Department of Health Care Services (DHCS), is designed to offer low-cost and sometimes even no-cost health coverage to those in California who qualify.
- Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) – The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) provides federal grants to states for supplemental foods, health care referrals, and nutrition education for low-income pregnant, breastfeeding, and non-breastfeeding postpartum women, and to infants and children up to age 5 who are found to be at nutritional risk.
- Head Start – Head Start and Early Head Start programs are free, federally funded programs designed to promote school readiness for infants, toddlers, and preschoolers from families that meet income eligibility requirements.
- Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) – LIHEAP helps keep families safe and healthy through initiatives that assist families with energy costs. LIHEAP provides federally funded assistance to reduce the costs associated with home energy bills, energy crises, weatherization, and minor energy-related home repairs.
- Veterans Pension and Survivor Benefits – A VA Survivors Pension offers monthly payments to qualified surviving spouses and unmarried dependent children of wartime Veterans who meet certain income and net worth limits set by Congress.
- Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) – CEP is a non-pricing meal service option for schools and school districts in low-income areas. CEP allows the nation’s highest poverty schools and districts to serve breakfast and lunch at no cost to all enrolled students without collecting household applications.
- Financial Assistance and Services for Native Americans (FASS) – The mission of BIA is to enhance the quality of life, promote economic opportunities, and to carry out the federal responsibilities entrusted to protect and improve the trust assets of American Indians and Alaska Natives.
